Sock Monkey and The Creators Project

Sock Monkey and The Creators Project

It’s that time of year again…. the most wonderful time of the year!

Sock Monkey on RoadThat’s right – Halloween is just around the corner and the night oil is burning in Harlem. In addition to making 6 super sweet and outlandish costumes for the NYC Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, I also decided to participate in The Creators Project Art and Technology Festival which is being held this weekend in Dumbo.  (I can always sleep later, right?)

The Creators Project is a global network dedicated to the celebration of creativity, culture and technology.  One of the featured projects is the FreeFall HighScore, an application available for iOS and Android.  The application is more or less a game or tool for creating moving art.  The premise being, make a ‘Preserver’ to protect your device, then fire up the application and drop it. The application records video of the fall, along with the time of the drop (the timer starts when the Preserver goes into free fall).  Results can be uploaded to the FFHS website and shared with others.

My contribution was a repurposed Halloween costume in the form of a 5 1/2 foot tall sock monkey.  With a few small modifications, and a custom designed foam case to secure the phone, I had a pretty sweet Preserver for the drop.

Six competitors arrived Friday night at a secret location to chuck their hard work and creativity off a building.  I have to say it was totally exhilarating!  When was the last time you got to throw something off a building? Or a bridge for that matter?  That alone was a rush – but it’s pretty nerve-racking to know that your intent is to keep an expensive device from smashing into a million bits!  Also, the monkey just looked awesome – check out the video here –

In the end, all the devices survived but one.  (Mine made it!).  Unfortunately I did NOT have the high score… but my boyfriend Tim held the world record with his iPot (2.7 seconds of free fall!) until he was beat out by the Creamy Cradle of Comfort (2.9 seconds!!)

If you happen to be in the NYC area and are looking for something to do today, the Sock Monkey, iPot and many other creative Preservers are on display at 81 Front Street until 10:00 pm.  There are tons of other events and exhibitions sponsored by the The Creators Project – including film screenings, panels and installations.

Check it out! Maybe I will see you there…..
